The Great I Am

Discover the mystery of Jesus as the “I AM” the Creator who became a human, revealing God’s presence, power, & purpose through His words & works. The Great I Am

Creator Becomes a Human

The story of Jesus Christ is unlike any other in human history. It tells of the Creator who chose to become a creature — the eternal Word who took on flesh and dwelt among us. The infinite God stepped into time, space, and limitation, not as a distant observer but as a man who walked, wept, and loved. This mystery lies at the heart of Christian faith: the divine becoming human to redeem humanity.

Did Jesus Ever Say He Was God?

This question has echoed through centuries. Many have wondered, Did Jesus truly claim divinity? The answer is woven through the Gospels, not just in His words but in His actions. John opens his Gospel with: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Paul describes Jesus in Colossians as “the image of the invisible God.” Jesus forgave sins, raised the dead, and accepted worship — actions only God could rightfully perform. When Thomas doubted Him, Jesus did not rebuke him, but instead revealed Himself. Thomas’ response — “My Lord and my God!” — was met not with correction, but with affirmation.

The Four Gospel Portraits – The Great I Am

Each Gospel writer paints a unique picture of Jesus: Mark focuses on His deeds — the power and immediacy of His ministry. Matthew emphasizes His teachings — the wisdom of the new Moses and promised Messiah. Luke gives us a historical narrative — the compassionate Savior for all people. John reveals Jesus’ divine self-understanding — the eternal Word made flesh. Together, they form a complete portrait of the One who is both fully God and fully man.

“Whom Are You, Jesus?” — John 7 & 8

In John 7 and 8, during the Festival of Tabernacles, Jesus reveals profound truths about His identity.
At the water ceremony, worshipers remembered how Moses struck the rock in the wilderness and water flowed out — a miracle pointing to a greater one to come. Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink.” During the light ceremony, the people celebrated how God guided Israel by a pillar of fire by night and a cloud by day. Standing amidst this celebration, Jesus declared, “I am the Light of the world.” he festival itself commemorated the time when God lived among His people in a tent — the tabernacle. Now, the living God was again dwelling among them, not in a tent, but in human form.

Before Abraham Was, I Am – The Great I Am

John 8:58, Jesus utters one of the most stunning statements in all of Scripture: “Before Abraham was born, I am”. Here, He uses the divine name revealed to Moses at the burning bush — “I AM WHO I AM.” This was no poetic metaphor. It was a direct claim to eternal existence and oneness with the Father. Jesus wasn’t merely saying He existed before Abraham; He was declaring Himself to be the eternal “I AM.” The crowd understood the weight of His words — they picked up stones to kill Him for what they saw as blasphemy. Yet Jesus stood as the revelation of God in flesh.

The Greatest News in Human Existence

C.S. Lewis once wrote that there is no room for mild approval of Jesus’ claims. Either He was delusional, deceitful — or He was telling the truth. For those who believe, His words and works are the greatest news of human existence. The Creator became a creature. The invisible became visible. The eternal entered time. Jesus Christ — the “I AM” — is not merely a teacher or prophet, but God Himself, come to dwell with us and redeem us. “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” — John 1:14. The Great I Am.
