What Is Fasting As A Christian?

Fasting is the practice of voluntarily abstaining from a particular thing (i.e. food, drink, Netflix etc) in order to grow closer to God. Your intention towards the fast needs to be focussed and of a genuine nature.

Should I Make Others Aware I Am Fasting?

When you fast it should be done with the mindset that only God needs to know. If you indicate to people you are fasting then it is not truly genuine but you are seeking to receive praise from others for your efforts rather than God.

What Should The Fast Consist Of?

You can decide the rules for your specific fasting in mind but you need to set a realistic goal in mind. You must ensure you do not use it as an excuse to underperform in school/work/business. Set how long you would like to do it for and if you have any medical health conditions please factor this in.

How Hard Should I Push Myself?

To reiterate you need to be realistic. God looks at your heart more than anything during your fast. In the same way, if you don’t lift the heaviest weights in the gym on your first day you would not want to fast to such extreme conditions that it would be to the detriment of your health.

Difference Between Starving & Fasting

The purpose of your fast reflects the outcome. If your fasting with the mindset of weight loss instead of God then you’re not fasting to grow closer to God but you are fasting to loss weight.

Bible Verses

Matthew 6:16-18 – “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,  so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Daniel 10:3 – “I ate no choice food; no meat or wine touched my lips; and I used no lotions at all until the three weeks were over”
